Macrium Reflect Free – Disk imaging software

Macrium Reflect Free Edition is a disk imaging software for Windows that can create disk images using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service and perform data recovery operations using Linux based and Windows based rescue CDs. The free version is limited to disk imaging and data recovery only, while the paid version packs in a file backup solution, incremental disk imaging and a handful of useful features.

We are going to look at the free version. Even though the free version does less compared to it’s paid counterpart, if you aren’t looking for data backup, it’s disk imaging capabilities are likely to suit your purpose.

Macrium-Reflect

Macrium Reflect can create full disk images for backup and restoration. Images can be stored on local or network drives, CD or DVD media using the built-in optical media burner, and removable drives connected using USB or Firewire. Images can also be mounted as a drive letter in Windows Explorer and restored using a custom Live CD.

In the event of Windows crash Macrium Reflect can be used to recover data from the unbootable system using a Live CD. Macrium Reflect offers both Linux based as well as Windows based Live CDs. Both allows you to boot into the system, load the restore software, overwrite the Windows system partition or simply retrieve data from the hard disk.

Macrium Reflect runs on Windows XP, Vista and 7 on both 32bit and 64 bit flavors.
