Opera downloads triple after EU Browser Ballot debut

It seems like people have finally realized that they do have a choice against Internet Explorer. Just days after Microsoft’s browser ballot screen went live for European users, Opera’s download tripled, said Rolf Assev, the chief strategy officer for Opera Software.

Opera is seeing big surges in downloads coming from major European countries, such as Belgium, France, Spain, Poland and the UK. Assev said the swell of downloads was above and beyond the increase caused by the final release of Opera 10.5 for Windows two days before. "We compared the downloads against previous launches, such as Opera 10.0, 10.10 and 9.5, and the tripling is above what we would normally expect with a new version launch," he said.

It’s not known how other browsers are faring with the ballot screen, but it can assumed that they too have seen a new rush of downloads. It would be interesting to see by how much. The preliminary reports have confirmed one thing though – the Browser Ballot screen is indeed working.
