Block spam SMS with SMSBlocker (free till June 28)

After the epic failure of Do Not Disturb (DND) and National Do Not Call (NDNC) Registry, subscribers have only one route to respite – spam SMS blockers. While this wouldn’t block telemarketers from calling you it will certainly help prevent them from inundating your inbox with spam messages.

India’s Pune based startup, Optinno has launched smsblocker, a sms spam blocking solution for mobile devices. The application checks for 6000 spam cases, detects spam automatically and quietly blocks it without alerting the user. Blocked messages are stored in a separate folder so you can sift through it later to see if any important messages got marked as spam.

SMS can be blocked based on content, bulk spam SMS, sender’s title or a specific number. Custom filtering options are available that can be adjusted as per privacy requirements. You can also white list certain numbers to allow through.

Support is currently limited to Nokia, Samsung and Sony phones. Even then, not all models are supported. The price is attractive though - just $2 (INR 99).

Optinno is also giving away the application for free till June 28.

  1. Hi ,

The site is asking for the IMEI No. and i am not sure how safe it would be to give it out...

  2. @Sreekanth, the service is using the IMEI number to lock the software to that particular handset, so that you can't use it in multiple phones. I suppose they are trustworthy enough to give away your IMEI.

The IMEI number is like the chassis no. The worst that can happen is somebody clones this number to another phone to make it valid, or use it to access warranty service etc.
