Open source video editor Lightworks beta released

The first beta of Lightworks, the open source professional-grade video editing tool, has just been released by its parent company EditShare. The company had announced plans to open source the software back in April 2010 (we covered that in October).

Lightworks is not the typical run-of-the-mill home video editing software - it is an advanced, very efficient and top of the line video editor, a claim that is easily backed up by the software’s association with several Hollywood blockbusters including Shutter Island, Revolutionary Road, The Aviator, The Departed, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Pulp Fiction, LA Confidential, Mission Impossible and many more.

This first public beta release of Lightworks 10 offers a complete set of video-editing tools, including media management and trimming. Real time special effects, multiple and secondary color corrections etc can be applied from the editor itself. Lightworks also promises to natively support a wide range of imported video formats.

Be aware, that despite the attractive price tag (free), it’s not really a tool for the casual users who simply wishes to quickly and easily edit a selection of video footage together. Video-editing enthusiasts and professionals, on the other hand, will find this software a powerful addition to their arsenal.

You have to register to download the software.
