Marine Debris Tour on Google Earth

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has created a KML tour for Google Earth that lets you explore the hundreds and thousands of debris polluting the oceans of Earth, in an effort to highlight the growing problem of marine debris.

Marine debris comes in many forms - from a cigarette butt to a 4,000-pound derelict fishing net. Ocean dumping, accidental container spillages, litter washed into storm drains, and wind-blown landfill waste are all contributing to this problem. Marine debris is a global problem affecting everything from the environment to the economy; from fishing and navigation to human health and safety; from the tiniest coral polyps to giant blue whales.

The NOAA Marine Debris Program has been undertaking a national and international effort focusing on identifying, reducing, and preventing debris in the marine environment.

By creating a tour for Google Earth, NOAA hopes to generate awareness among the tech-savvy folks about the growing problem.
